French President Emmanuel Macron has raised eyebrows for an unusual fashion choice as he addressed world leaders in Davos.
Macron wore a pair of blue reflective aviator sunglasses at the World Economic Forum that drew comparisons to Tom Cruise in the film Top Gun.
The move prompted speculation about whether he was trying to cover up a big night or hide an injury.
Why was Macron wearing the sunglasses?
The French president has a burst blood vessel in one of his eyes, which is known as a subconjunctival haemorrhage, according to French officials cited by Australian Broadcasting Corporation and other news outlets.
“He is wearing glasses because of photosensitivity, while the minor issue mentioned last week clears up,” a source close to Macron told the broadcaster.
What did Macron say at Davos?
In the speech he made while wearing the sunglasses, Macron warned against a shift towards autocracy and a “world without rules, where international law is trampled underfoot” and “imperial ambitions are resurfacing”.
He condemned the “endless accumulation of new tariffs” as “fundamentally unacceptable”, particularly when used as leverage against territorial sovereignty.
In veiled references to Donald Trump, he said he preferred “respect to bullies” and the “rule of law to brutality”.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump threatened a 200 per cent tariff on French wine and champagne after Macron declined an invitation to join the US-led Gaza “Board of Peace”.
Macron’s tone was markedly tougher than the British Prime Minister’s, who has been accused of “appeasing” Trump as he seeks closer trade ties with the US.
Trump arrived in Davos on Wednesday, where he is expected to have meetings about acquiring the Danish territory of Greenland despite European concerns.

The French President was first seen with a very red eye at a New Year’s ceremony for the armed forces on 15 January.
“Please excuse the unsightly appearance of my eye,” he reportedly told attendees.
“It’s nothing serious.
“Simply see an unintentional reference to the ‘Eye of the Tiger’… For those who catch the reference, it is a sign of determination,” he joked, referring to the theme song from Rocky III.

“Please excuse these glasses, which are related to a minor issue,” he said.
“I have to wear them for a while, so you’ll have to put up with me in this state.”
What caused the condition?
The NHS says the most common causes of a subconjunctival haemorrhage are:
coughing sneezing straining nose blowing a direct injury to your eye high blood pressureThe condition is harmless, painless and does not affect vision.
The bleeding occurs under the conjunctiva, which is the layer of tissue above the white part of the eye, the sclera.
Treatment is not necessary and it clears up on its own in one to two weeks.
