ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The anticipation is building as Team USA prepares to announce its athletes for the aerial freestyle skiing team at the 2026 Milan and Cortina Winter Olympics. The announcement is expected on Wednesday and gold medalist Chris Lillis, a Pittsford native, has already qualified.
Chris Lillis won gold in the aerials team event during the 2022 Beijing Olympics. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake spoke with his parents, Jamie and Bernie Lillis, ahead of the announcement. Chris Lillis was inspired by his older brother, Jon, who is also an Olympian. Their parents’ home office is lined with medals and pictures of the boys, showcasing their achievements. The parents said that, once their children decided that aerial skiing was the sport for them, they were all in.
“After the last Olympics and he won gold in the Olympics, a friend of his that went through the program with him sent us a little note. And it was a sticky pad that said on it I’m going to win gold in the 2022 Olympics and named the tricks that he was going to do,” Bernie Lillis said. “Now, this is a kid who wrote this down at 14, and it’s eight years later. It was the exact tricks that he did.”
Chris still has that sticky note. After Beijing, he popped over to his mom’s school to speak to the children and show them his medal. The Lillis family remains close despite Chris moving away at 13 to train and travel the world for competitions. They are eager to cheer him on in Italy.
