Another one bites the dust — a Morrissey concert, that is.
The '80s rock icon has crossed another upcoming tour date off of the calendar, leaving just one U.S. date remaining after a rash of cancellations throughout the last several weeks.
The former lead singer of The Smiths was meant to hit the road across parts of the United States this month, with five sold-out shows and limited tickets remaining across the other three at the start of the year, and just two of the shows played as planned.
On Jan. 6, he sent his “apologies to the loyal fans affected in Rancho Mirage and San Diego,” which were the first two scheduled locations meant to take place on the 3rd and 6th, respectively. According the venue, the reason for the cancellation was "an adverse reaction to a prescription medication." Instead, the tour would kick off in San Antonio on the 10th.
View this post on InstagramHe went through with that performance, as well as the following in Oklahoma City on the 13th, but cancelled St. Louis on Jan 15—due to the flu, according to a post from the artist on his Morrissey Central message board, per Rolling Stone—Atlanta on Jan. 17, and now, the St. Petersburg show meant to take place tonight, Jan. 20.
Reasons were not given for the rest of the cancellations, though over the last several months, his team has offered a wide variety of explanations for other similar instances. Last summer, Morrissey also faced shows that did not go on, blaming "absolutely zero music industry support" at that time, and then, come fall, cancelled several international dates over “extreme exhaustion.” He also had to scrap shows in Connecticut and Massachusetts over "credible threats" to his life.
While he hasn't had much to say about the cancellations himself, Morrissey did post a cryptic message earlier this month, which ended up pointing to the lead single off of his new album, "Make-up is a Lie," out on March 6.
TBD if fans will get to see him play the final show on Thursday, Jan. 22, in Hollywood, Fla, or if those with tickets to the original opening night in Rancho Mirage, will see their show, the only one that wasn’t outright cancelled, rescheduled. As of now, a new date hasn’t been announced, and fans have until Feb. 2 to request a refund.
