The Best and Worst Bears Player Grades From the Divisional Round

Dominique Robinson made the most of his playing time in the Bears’ NFC Divisional Round appearance.

Robinson, a Day 3 pick from Ryan Poles’ first draft class as Bears general manager, earned a team-best 91.4 grade from Pro Football Focus for his efforts in Chicago’s second-round playoff loss against the Los Angeles Rams on its initial breakdown of the game. And upon further review, Robinson’s grade ended up as an 89.5 — which was still the best on the team. What a pleasant surprise that turned out to be.

That loss still sticks in my craw, but I am doing my best to find whatever silver linings I can so I can fully process the defeat. One such silver lining was Dominique Robinson’s performance. Robinson collected one sack, one tackle-for-loss, one quarterback hit, and two solo tackles while playing on just 21 defensive snaps. Putting up that type of production while getting a 26.9 percent snap share is one way to earn a top grade.

Dominique Robinson has appeared in 46 games in his four-year NFL career. He has just 3.5 sacks, 68 total tackles (40 solo), seven quarterback hits, and six tackles-for-loss in the small sample of snaps. Hence, his performance on Sunday as the highest-graded Bears player stands out. Robinson is among the Bears players who are set to hit free agency this offseason. I’ll be curious to see if Chicago brings him back as a depth piece on the defensive line and special teams contributor. A showing like that could help build his case.

Dominique Robinson and the best (and worst) Bears player grades from Sunday

Let’s take a look at some of the best, worst, and most notable grades from regulars on the Bears offense:

    BEST

78.9: Jonah Jackson, right guard 77.5: DJ Moore, wide receiver 69.2: Olamide Zaccheaus, wide receiver

    WORST:

44.1: Drew Dalman, center 59.8: Luther Burden III, wide receiver 61.9: Joe Thuney, left tackle

Of the 16 Bears players who appeared on offense, quarterback Caleb Williams’ 65.8 grade checked in as the sixth best. One thing I’d love to see from PFF is how his touchdown throw to tight end Cole Kmet graded out. That was a fascinating play that went from feeling doomed at the start to full-on elation upon the play’s completion.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the best, worst, and most notable grades from regulars on Chicago’s defense:

    BEST

89.5: Dominiqur Robinson, defensive end 82.1: Jaquan Brisker, safety 78.7: Kevin Byard, safety

    WORST

37.0: Gervon Dexter Sr., defensive tackle 40.7: Grady Jarrett, defensive tackle 51.2: Andrew Billings, defensive tackle

It feels notable that Chicago’s defense had six players earn a 70 grade or better. That group includes linebacker D’Marco Jackson (76.1), defensive end Austin Booker (73.6), and cornerback Kyler Gordon (70.2). This defense needs an overhaul, particularly on the defensive line where a chunk of the worst grades from last week’s game pop up. However, this group has some interesting pieces that I look forward to seeing get a chance under Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen next season.

With that being said, there are some notable Bears players who graded out well on Sunday who could have played their final game with Chicago’s football team. Safeties Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard are set to become free agents when the new league year opens in March. Both players have expressed an interest in returning. However, I believe both understand that this front office might have to pick one over the other. It makes for a fascinating conversation that we’ll participate in later in the offseason.
