Concord University, an NCAA Division II school in Athens, West Virginia, has announced the addition of a women’s triathlon program, set to begin competition in the 2026-2027 academic year. This addition bring the school up to 13 NCAA sports and 18 athletics programs overall.
With the creation of the program, Concord becomes the first West Virginia school across all NCAA divisions to offer a collegiate triathlon team.
“Adding women’s triathlon to Concord is an exciting leap forward,” said President Dr. Bethany Meighen. “We’re proud to be the first in West Virginia to offer the sport and even prouder to provide more opportunities for student-athletes to grow, compete, and thrive.”
“Firstly, I would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Meighen for her support in adding this exciting new sport to Mountain Lion Athletics,” added Concord Co-Athletic Director Luke Duffy. “I would also like to thank USA Triathlon and Tim Yount for offering their guidance and expertise in how this sport will benefit Concord University and our future student-athletes. Our geographic location allows us to consistently compete against some of the strongest programs in the sport while offering a training landscape that will elevate the student-athlete experience from day one. We are excited to build and develop this program moving forward.”
The school has taken a fairly aggressive approach to integrating athletics into its campus life. According to federal data, 475 out of its 1,609 undergraduate population are student athletes, equating to approximately 30% despite only offering 13 sports.
While not an NCAA Division II sport, the CU women’s triathlon club team will compete against other colleges under the banner of USA Triathlon. Currently there are 41 schools across the nation that sponsor triathlon, including 12 Division II schools: Black Hills State, Cal Poly Humboldt, Colorado Mesa University, Drury University, Emmanuel College, King University, Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry College, Roberts Wesleyan University, St. Thomas Aquinas College, University of Indianapolis, and Wingate University.
Concord is in the midst of interviewing candidates for the head coaching role, with no announcement at the time of publication.
The mountainous terrain of southern West Virginia will allow triathletes to train in ideal conditions for competition. The teams will train for biking and running at Pipestem State Park. Since the university does not have a pool or sponsor a swim team, athletes will use Adventure Lake within the state park for swimming training.
