Gilmore Girls Star Explains Why His Character Is Still So Beloved 25 Years Later

Scott Patterson shared his thoughts on why his Gilmore Girls character Luke Danes remains a fan favorite more than 25 years after the comedy-drama series made its debut.

Speaking with Collider in January 2026, Patterson, 67, described the hardworking Stars Hollow diner owner as strong, dependable, and consistent— as well as a guy who doesn’t take anything from anybody.

"I think people gravitate toward Luke because he's unchanging,” Patterson explained. “He's this Rock of Gibraltar character who is selfless. It's kind of a post-World War II mentality, where it ain't about me. It's about everybody else, and what I can do for them, and suffer in silence, and not protest, and wake up early, grind all day. Help your friends. Love your friends in the way that you do. Don't suffer fools. I think they like that part. I think the kids like Luke because he doesn't take any crap."

For seven seasons, from 2000 to 2007, Patterson’s Luke Danes served up coffee on the original Gilmore Girls series, then returned for the Netflix revival miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a decade later. In 2025, the actor embraced the role once again, greeting fans during the Gilmore Girls Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Hollywood on the Luke’s Diner set.

In a 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Patterson admitted that nothing would ever compare to his role on Gilmore Girls. “It’s the great role of my life,” he shared. “It doesn’t matter what I do the rest of my career, nothing’s gonna match that. I know it, fans know it, I embrace it, and it’s a miracle that lightning ever struck once, right? And when it does, man, grab it, cause it ain’t gonna happen again. I’m just very grateful.”

Scott Patterson Thought 'Gilmore Girls' Would Last 5 Years

In October 2025, Patterson celebrated the 25thanniversary of the Gilmore Girls premiere with a tribute on Facebook. “Twenty-five years ago, we injected a coffee IV into the veins of the world, and twenty-five years later, the world can’t get enough,” he wrote.

After describing the role of Luke as the “honor” of his career, he thanked fans for their loyalty to the series. “It is because of your thoughts, feelings, and voices that this little show grew into a global behemoth,” he wrote. “Thank you for the love, one and all. I will never be able to repay such a generous outpouring, but I will certainly try. For you, Luke’s is always open, the coffee is piping hot…. and it’s on the house. I raise my mug to you all.”

In the new Collider interview, Patterson admitted that no one could have “imagined” or “envisioned” Gilmore Girls’ longevity. “I remember speculating, year one, how long do you think this is going to go?” the actor recalled. “And I thought five seasons because it's so good, and the competition's really tough. But here we are at 25, and I think we're primed for 25 more.”
