ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With the bitter cold hitting the Rochester area, residents are urged to check their pipes to avoid costly damages.
Colin Luttrell, owner of Colin the Plumber, explained that copper pipes are particularly susceptible to freezing and splitting.
“Your house is usually going to have copper in it. Copper is a really high factor of splitting and freezing,” Luttrell said.
Luttrell warned that even a small pipe can cause significant damage if it bursts. “Say, if this was in your house and this split and broke, you’re probably looking at, $200 to $400 bucks, if it’s just a simple crack and fix,” he said, while showcasing a smaller copper pipe.
He shared an example of a recent incident where a burst pipe caused extensive damage to a home, ruining the first and second floors, and affecting the basement. “It could mess up mechanicals, as in your water heater, your furnace, anything electrical down there. It could cause a significant damage,” Luttrell said.
Luttrell anticipated receiving 20 to 30 calls over the next week due to burst pipes. He noted that frozen pipes account for about 50% of their calls during cold weather.
To prevent pipes from freezing, Luttrell advised keeping the heat on, even if it means a higher heating bill. “Crank that heat up. The more heat you have, the more forced air. You know, in your boiler system. Just keep everything running,” he said. He also suggested keeping a faucet running with a small drip to maintain water flow through the pipes.
Luttrell also recommended having a plumber on call during cold weather, noting that he and other local companies are available 24 hours for emergencies.
