NORTH CHILI, N.Y. — Sherita Traywick hosted her annual Martin Luther King Jr. community gathering this afternoon in North Chili, honoring the legacy of Dr. King with prayer and local poets, while reflecting on unity.
Traywick, founder of Young & Gifted Global Ministries, said the day acknowledges that Dr. King gave his life for people to have the freedom enjoyed today.
“It means that our kids, it should be a pause, the day where we pause and we tell our kids that everything you have is because of your blood, sweat and tears of people (who came) before you and sacrificed,” Traywick said.
During the event, Traywick announced her candidacy for Congress in New York’s 25th District, currently represented by Rep. Joe Morelle. She chose Martin Luther King Jr. Day for the announcement, saying Dr. King fought against injustice, which is something she is also fighting against.
