LOS ANGELES — Lakers forward Drew Timme was highly embarrassed but only slightly apologetic for his fashion choice. He showed up to his postgame interview on Sunday night wearing a yellow t-shirt bearing a predator dinosaur image and suggestive wording.
“I’m not big into fashion,” Timme said, his face reddening. “This is a Predator movie reference. … This is my fashion.”
Timme might want to rethink his clothing choices, especially if he is going to increasingly find himself in the spotlight.
Timme garnered attention for his breakout performance in Saturday’s loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. With the Lakers missing three of their normal starters, Coach JJ Redick looked to Timme, a two-way contract player, for help, and the 6-foot-9 power forward responded in head-turning fashion.
He scored a career-high 21 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting from the field (3 for 4 from 3-point range), and collected two rebounds, four assists and two steals in 29 minutes. His point total was second only to teammate Marcus Smart’s 25 that night.
Redick was so impressed by Timme, he kept him in the rotation for Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors. The former Gonzaga star had three points, three rebounds and two assists, one to LeBron James for a 3-pointer that made it a one-possession game in the second quarter.
And Timme is expected to stay in the rotation as the Lakers begin a two-week, eight-game trip with a game against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.
“It’s easy when you are playing with guys that just get you the ball in easy spots,” Timme said. “Wide-open threes. Smart and Bron are just passing in the pocket. They are just easy. We were just playing basketball, and I just happened to get the shots early. It’s great when guys like that give you ball and they will help you too. It’s great team basketball.”
While his numbers weren’t as notable as the previous night, Timme still earned praise from his coach and teammates on Sunday.
“Oh, he was great,” Redick said. “He certainly earned a spot coming off last night (Saturday), where he played phenomenally. You get the clipboard; we had talked about it, so I knew it was coming.”
Before Saturday, Timme had played a total of 16 minutes for the Lakers this season, averaging fewer than five minutes in five of the six games he appeared in, mostly in garbage time.
“It’s pretty cool that they trust me that much, especially since I haven’t really done much for them,” Timme said. “So it feels great.”
Timme, a three-time consensus All-American at Gonzaga, said he has been told since college that he didn’t belong, a feeling that was underscored when he went undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft. Left without a team, he joined the Milwaukee Bucks’ Summer League team but was waived 16 days later.
He then signed with the Bucks’ G League team, the Wisconsin Herd and averaged 9.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 12 games before needing season-ending surgery to repair a fractured left foot.
The Sacramento Kings signed him before the start of the next season but waived him the same day. From there, he bounced around the G League before getting a look from the Brooklyn Nets, who signed him to a multi-year contract in March 2025.
In nine appearances with the Nets, he averaged 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists but didn’t last. He was waived last October and landed with the South Bay Lakers, where he has averaged 24.3 points while shooting over 50% during both the tip-off tournament and the G League regular season.
Timme signed a two-way contract with the Lakers in late November, giving him what appears to be a stable future.
“In college and since I’ve left, it’s been you can’t do this, you can’t do that, you’re not good enough for this and that. All these things that I can’t do. And I see it, and it’s fuel,” Timme said.
“At the end of the day, I’m a good player. I believe in myself and my abilities, and I believe that I can impact the game at any level, anywhere. To be able to have this opportunity and to be able to help the team, it’s great.”
