Yale Sets Five New Pool Records In Bulldogs’ Senior Night Sweep of Cornell

Three women’s pool records and two men’s pool records fell on the two day meet at the hands of the Yale Bulldogs. The Bulldogs completed the sweep of Cornell with the women winning 192-108, and the men following suit, winning 195.5-104.5. Diving took place on Friday, while swimming was raced on Saturday.

    Women’s Recap

    The Bulldogs clipped a pair of pool records in relays, the first of which came in the 400 medley relay; with the quartet of Devyn Sargent (53.98), Jessey Li (59.14), Penny Zarczynski (54.93), and Sara Plunkett (49.76) combined for a dominant win in 3:37.81, notching a new Kiphuth Pool record.

    The 200 free relay had a similar outcome, with the quartet of Ele Donegan (23.53), Julia Ebli (22.82), Caroline McCurdy (23.22), and Plunkett (22.39) continuing Yale’s pool record-breaking relay ways with a near second and a half win in the event in 1:31.96.

    Yale senior Jessey Li took down the Kiphuth pool record in 1:00.19. She has already been as fast as 1:00.14 in October in a dual with Penn State and boasts a best time of 59.96 from the 2023 Ivy League Championships. Later in the meet, Li secured the win in the 200 IM, touching eight tenths ahead of Sargent (2:01.71), clocking her fastest time of the season in 2:00.91.

    The Bulldogs finished 1-2-3 in the 1-meter diving event; Lily Horenkamp led the way in 295.50, with Lola Malarky (279.68) and Paige Lai (273.75) finishing 2-3, more than 15 points better than the rest of the event’s participants.

    Yale’s Ebli took the half-second win in the 200 free in 1:48.48, Cornell’s Jung Min Yoon swam a lifetime best 1:48.99 to finish runner-up.

    Sargent found individual success as well, earning the win in the 100 back, finishing more than half a second ahead of Cornell’s Ming Xu (54.83) in 54.18.

    Plunkett added another win for Yale in the 50 free, with her final time of 23.18, just ahead of Katie Li in 23.32.

    Cornell earned an individual win in the 400 IM by way of Hojung Yoon, who touched nearly a second and a half faster than the field in 4:19.11.

    Katie Yee touched first for Cornell in the 100 fly in 55.03; Yale’s Zarczynski was 2nd in 55.26, and Donegan was 3rd in 55.40.

    Cornell also picked up a diving win on the women’s side with Lilla Kuziemko scoring the highest with her 279.30. Her teammate, Morgan Ogata, was just behind her in 270.30.

    Men’s Recap

    The Bulldogs saw a pair of pool records fall on the men’s side, with sophomore Nick Finch winning the 100 fly in dominating fashion. Touching the wall in 45.77, more than three seconds better than everyone in the field, setting a new pool record in the event. Finch was still well off his best with this swim, having logged a season best of 44.62 at the Ohio State Invitational in November, and a best time in the event from March of 44.57 from last season’s NCAA Championships. Finch also won the 50 free, touching in the only time under 20 seconds in 19.78.

    Senior Noah Millard clocked the fastest 1650 free in the history of Kiphuth Pool, touching in 15:03.15. Similar to Finch, Millard has been considerably faster than this record time; his fastest time this season also came at the Ohio State Invite in 14:52.11, while his lifetime fastest swim came at the NCAA Championships in 14:28.43. Millard picked up wins in the 500 free (4:23.06) and 1000 free (9:09.99).

    Yale’s men’s relays also found success against Cornell. The Bulldogs’ 400 medley relay of Jake Wang (47.23), Charlie Egeland (52.11), Finch (44.93), and Deny Nankov (43.39) was untouchable, taking the win by over four seconds ahead of their ‘B’ relay (3:11.95), and by more than six seconds ahead of Cornell’s ‘A’ relay (3:13.92).

    The 200 free relay of Mackey Nurkic Kacapor (20.58), Lucius Brown (20.06), Nareg Minassian (20.16), and Finch (19.14) clocked a winning time of 1:19.94.

    Nicholas Chau earned a pair of diving wins for the Bulldogs, claiming the 1-meter win in 336.83 and the 3-meter in a score of 355.28.

    Nankov touched just ahead of Cornell’s Jaques Grove (44.64) to secure the win in the 100 free in 44.45.

    Cornell’s Pietro Ubertalli swept the backstroke events. In the 100 back, Ubertalli finished just seven hundredths ahead of Yale’s Ethan Guo (47.97) to claim the sprint end of the double in 47.90. He later touched just two-tenths faster than Yale’s Crash Ackerly (1:44.31) to complete the sweep in 1:44.09.

    Haihan Xu also picked up two wins for Cornell. His first came in the 100 breast, where he touched just ahead of Wang of Yale (53.85) in 53.61. Xu later won the 200 breast, turning in the only time better than 2:00 in 1:57.79.

    Grove did come away with a win on the meet for Cornell, swimming to a season-best time in a close win in the 200 fly of 1:46.07.
