What the Heck Happened On That Last Caleb Williams Interception?

In the heat of the moment, I called Caleb Williams’ overtime interception inexplicable.

Given time, hindsight, additional footage, breakdowns from NFL analysts and insiders, and commentary from Williams and Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson, I wish I would have used some softer language. Before we do some deeper diving into the INT, let’s hear from the most important parties.

BEARS QUARTERBACK CALEB WILLIAMS ON THE INT:

Caleb Williams’ breakdown of the moment immediately after the game…

“Obviously haven’t seen it and don’t really know, but in the moment, saw the front side safety down, the front side of the concept, ended up getting hemmed up a little bit, so I moved on and had DJ going over the top of all of it. Just a miscommunication between him and I. Tried to flatten him off under the safety, and he kept it vertical from what I saw, obviously, in the moment.” (Bears Wire)

… is consistent with what he said on Monday as the Bears were cleaning out their lockers at Halas Hall:

“It was just a miscommunication. Trying to just flatten him off on the safety. Since the other safety was down, I felt like we had enough space over there so I tried to flatten him off. It was just a miscommunication. His route is to go deep and attack that angle, which he did. We thought we were going to go under the safety at that point. It didn’t happen that way.” (670 The Score) Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images

    BEARS HEAD COACH BEN JOHNSON:

“You know, I”ll have to see it. I stand behind the defense a little bit, so I did see space. I saw grass. And then I didn’t see that defender from my perspective, so I’ll have to see it. But I did think, as the play was going, I was like, ‘Oh, crap we’ve got something.’ But great play by that player.”

I’ll be curious to see what the Bears head coach has to say about Caleb Williams’ interception after he gets another look on film. For what it’s worth, I can see what Johnson is hinting at when he shared his inner monologue saying that he thought they had something with that route concept.

Breaking down Caleb Williams’ last interception

There are some really good breakdowns of the Caleb Williams interception that provide insight, perspective, route concepts, and more. It was cool to see the online football community get in its bag and crack the code of this play:

I see miscommunication Yes you always always always want a pass catcher to be friendly and protect the throw— pic.twitter.com/LZvPmcEGRO

You can’t blame Caleb Williams for the INT in OT….. the Bears have the absolute perfect play calledThe lack of effort by #2 is really telling….you can’t give up on this route like this. #DaBears pic.twitter.com/E584tOmEQR

Too many people worried about whether or not DJ beats Curl across the field for a catch at full pace.Effort on this play would have made this a walk-off skinny. If Curl respects the Skinny then DJ is getting the rock. It's an indefensible effort. t.co/QaGl2Wj12v pic.twitter.com/ncltxna6c2

This angle makes DJ Moore look even worse. He didn’t even give up on his route at a certain point, it was zero effort the entire route.Really trying to rap my head around this one ? t.co/D70uolTNfc pic.twitter.com/cwmkjY5HzL

Even after sleeping on it, I still find myself trying to strike a balance with my feelings. Because, in one corner, that Caleb Williams interception made me sick. It led directly to points for the Rams and the end of what was a wonderful season of football watching. But on the other hand, I appreciate the gumption to play it aggressively in that moment.

Matt nailed it in his 24-hour rule post earlier today by underscoring that playing for 15-20 yards to get into Cairo Santos’ field goal range in crummy weather and field conditions would not have been a stone-cold lock. And as I said in Bullets, it is hypocritical to champion Ben Johnson’s aggressive nature in one breath, then wish that he would be conservative in the next.

In the end, I can’t stop wondering if that is the last play we’ll see from DJ Moore in a Bears uniform. If it is, that one will sting. Before that moment, Moore had been building a case for being a big-game receiver. To see a player who hadn’t been on a winning team since his senior year in high school sacrifice some season-long numbers for the sake of the team, then haul in some huge catches for Caleb Williams down the stretch was refreshing. Moore appeared to be rewriting an unsavory narrative that had followed him throughout the year. But the way that final play unfolded will leave a sour taste in many mouths — and understandably so.
