Amanda Seyfried Makes Bold Confession About Her Future on Broadway

Amanda Seyfried showed off her singing chops in musical films like Mamma Mia and Les Misérables, but don't expect to see her on Broadway. When asked whether she would consider doing a stage production after working on developing a Thelma and Louise musical that still hasn't come to fruition, the 40-year-old didn't mince words: "No."

"I was working on one, but it’s too much," she told The New Yorker in a Jan. 18 interview. "I worked on it for a year and a half. Then it moved to London, and I’m not doing it." Seyfried announced she was working on the musical in 2023, but it had already been in production since 2021 and still seems no closer to curtain up in 2026.

"I think I’ve aged out of [the role] by now, and I don’t have the stamina," she explained as to why she's no longer attached. Plus, it sounds like live performances may not be the best fit for the star. "I don’t have the emotional stability to do it," she admitted. "I have too much panic and stage fright."

Seyfried also didn't like how much the production took over her life. "The last time I won a Golden Globe, for The Dropout, I wasn’t there, because I was doing a workshop for a musical adaptation of Thelma & Louise," she explained. "I remember going over to my friend’s house that night and watching myself win on TV and thinking, 'You idiot.' But I was just so devoted to the show."

Seyfried is also notoriously critical of her own performances. "I wasn’t even present during Les Mis. I was just listening to myself, every time," she remembered of the experience. "I regret my lack of presence during that film. I regret how critical I was... Now, as a mom, I’m just, like, I’ve gotta show all the way up with everything I do, or else it ain’t worth it."

Her approach to singing in her new film The Testament of Ann Lee was completely different from anything she's done before. "I didn’t work with my voice coach for this," she shared. "The singing was, for me, an extension of Ann Lee’s faith. It wasn’t about quality. It was about however I was going to sound, in the moment, with what I was feeling."

The experience led to an epiphany, where she learned to "connect to her voice differently."

"Letting go of your judgment, and the criticism that is in your ear, is so liberating," she said. "I really didn’t realize how much I hated my voice before. But with Ann... I was relating to her, and not to my own ego. What a perfect light-bulb experience to have on the eve of turning forty."
