Newly elected Aurora Councilman Rob Andrews was arrested Saturday on suspicion of DUI, the man confirmed in a statement.
Andrews, 41, was pulled over by Aurora police officers after making an improper U-turn, he said in a statement on social media. After sobriety testing during the traffic stop, Andrews said officers determined he “was not fit to drive.”
The Aurora representative was one of four new councilmembers elected in November and sworn in on Dec. 1. He chairs two committees, including public safety, and sits as vice chair on a third.
“I take full responsibility for my decision,” Andrews stated. “I am deeply sorry — to my family, to the people I serve, and to everyone who expects better from me.”
“I am grateful no one was hurt,” Andrews’ statement continued. “That does not lessen the seriousness of what happened. I am cooperating fully with the legal process and working closely with my family and counsel as this moves forward.”
The traffic stop happened at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on South Chambers Road, near the intersection of South Chambers Circle, after an officer spotted Andrews splitting lanes and making wide turns, Aurora police confirmed to Denver7.
Andrews was arrested on suspicion of DUI, driving with excessive alcohol content, changing lanes when unsafe (weaving) and making a left turn from the wrong lane, according to reporting from Denver7. The Aurora councilmember spent Saturday night on a detox hold at the Aurora Municipal Detention Center and was released Sunday morning.
