Stranger Things star Amybeth McNulty rose to fame playing the main character in Netflix's Anne with an E, but her role as Robin (Maya Hawke)'s girlfriend Vickie in the supernatural drama is close to the Irish actress' heart for a special reason.

"I grew up as a queer kid in Donegal and... I came out online when I was like 16, 17, [and] said I was bisexual," the 24-year-old told Ireland’s The Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty on Jan. 16. "We had people in my hometown going up to my parents going, 'I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter!'"
The actress said getting to play one half of a queer couple on such a massive show has meant "everything" to her. "It gives me more of an invigoration when I do roles like this—never mind on such a big platform as this, which is still crazy to me—wanting to do it justice and do it right for kids like me growing up. I think it's important."

McNulty particularly loves that being in a lesbian relationship is part of Robin and Vickie's story, but it's not the sole focus or a gimmick. "The queer storyline is a part of their chapter while they're dealing with monsters and there's all these other things going on," she said. "It doesn't have to be about that. It's just a part of it. And I think that's ideal. I like that a lot."

The show also holds special meaning for McNulty because it was the last big audition she was able to tell her parents about before they both died. She said they "had a good feeling" about her getting the role. "They were right, and that was that was quite nice for me,” she said.
