After three seasons, Max Drag will be playing college football close to home.
The Chapin, S.C., native, who signed with Appalachian State in 2023 and played there for a couple of seasons before transferring to UCF, is now set to play just up the road from his hometown — 25 minutes away, in fact. He has committed to South Carolina out of the transfer portal, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer.
After just one game in 2023, Drag appeared in all 11 games for the Mountaineers in 2024 and scored his first career touchdown. He appeared set to remain at App State through the 2025 season, but instead entered the transfer portal. Drag ultimately landed at UCF, where he played in 11 games and caught three passes for 19 yards.

— Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) January 18, 2026Drag, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, left the Knights after one season. He’ll now suit up for the Gamecocks, who didn’t extend an offer to him out of high school but landed him out of the transfer portal a few years later.
Drag is the 25th player to commit to the Gamecocks from the transfer portal. He is currently the only tight end in the portal to pledge this cycle.
