The Chicago Bears playing in the nightcap of the divisional round’s Sunday slate of games means we get to touch on some NFL news before we bundle up and Bear Down.
Falcons hire Kevin Stefanski as new head coach
One day after the New York Giants made headlines in the NFL news cycle for hiring John Harbaugh, the Atlanta Falcons made the second coaching hire of the offseason by bringing in Kevin Stefanski. The two-time NFL Coach of the Year replaces Raheem Morris, who was let go earlier in January. Stefanski’s hiring is notable, in part, because it was made by Falcons President of Football Matt Ryan — who still needs to hire a general manager, but is the de facto football decision-maker in Atlanta. I’m not sure how that will impact the hire, but the chain of command being that Stefanski will report to Ryan (and not the GM) feels notable.
If you’ll recall, Bears Assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham interviewed with the Falcons earlier in the month. And while a move to GM would be a promotion, two sources have indicated Chicago would not get compensatory draft picks for losing Cunningham to the Falcons. That situation will be worth monitoring so long as the job is open and Cunningham is a candidate for the position.

The Denver Broncos had a thrilling overtime win against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. Unfortunately, the quarterback who led them to victory will not be around to play in the AFC Championship Game. Bo Nix suffered a broken ankle late in the game and will miss the rest of the team’s playoff run. This leaves Jarrett Stidham lined up to start in the biggest game of the year against the winner of Sunday’s game between the New England Patriots and Houston Texans. Naturally, this leads to some quirky facts from NFL news breaker Adam Schefter:
Broncos QB Jarrett Stidham has four career NFL starts, which will be the fewest by any QB entering a Conference Championship start in NFL history. Jeff Hostetler had five career starts, including the playoffs, entering the 1990 NFC Championship Game. t.co/mS7vXYAZB6
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 18, 2026Stidham hasn’t started a game since 2023 and has played on a grand total of 18 snaps in four regular season games since the start of the 2024 season. Whether Stidham plays the Patriots (who drafted him in 2019) or Texans (who have been putting the screws to opposing QBs) next week, he will have his work cut out for him.
Other NFL News and Rumors…
Some NFL news and rumors from around the league to put a bow on this post.
ICYMI: The Packers have reportedly agreed to give Matt LaFleur an extension to keep him as the team’s head coach. LaFleur has a 76-40-1 record in regular-season games and has made the postseason in six of the seven years he has been running the show in Green Bay. But he has lost three of his last four games against the Bears, including a pair of epic collapses. Mike McCarthy and the Pittsburgh Steelers? Sure, why not?No one loves being from Pittsburgh more than Mike McCarthy. Ted Thompson called him “Pittsburgh Macho” when he hired him as Packers coach. There’s also a deep emotional attachment to his hometown, part of which he shared in this story: t.co/aka9jGcafQ t.co/sDlAthWPXl
— Rob Demovsky (@RobDemovsky) January 18, 2026 ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Cleveland Browns have put in a request for a second interview with Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Coordinator Grant Udinski for the team’s head-coaching vacancy. If hired, Udinski would be the youngest head coach ever hired in league history.PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
Mike McDaniel has an in-person interview lined up with the Browns, too. Cleveland also has interviews lined up with Jim Schwartz (currently the team’s deensive coordinator) and former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. I’m not sure what the Browns are going to do to fill the void left behind by the dismissal of Kevin Stefanski. Something to watch in the offseason after yet another soul-crushing playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills, whose head coach was miffed about some officiating calls down the stretch that went against his team:Sean McDermott is on the NFL’s competition committee and I would not be surprised to see him/the Bills propose some type of rule change this offseason t.co/X36kt2LihH
