Daryl Mitchell overtakes Virat Kohli as ‘batter with highest average’ after hundred in IND vs NZ 3rd ODI

Virat Kohli’s name is synonymous with consistency in ODI cricket. But he isn’t the only one. Much like Kohli, Daryl Mitchell’s entire 50-over career has been a peak. The New Zealand number four averages a mind-boggling 58.95 in ODIs. No batter, with a minimum of 2000 runs and at least 50 innings played, averages more than Mitchell.

Redefining consistency

However, those two aren’t comparable names. At least for the regular observer of the game. Kohli’s been scoring bucketloads of runs for 18 years, while Mitchell stands at just 5. Being from New Zealand also doesn’t help his case. He doesn’t have the large fanbase to hype him up, like Asian players.

His reputation skyrocketed in the ODI World Cup 2023, where he scored two hundreds against India, including one in the semifinal. For many, the ongoing India vs New Zealand ODI series has been an eye-opener. Mitchell isn’t like any other ODI player; he’s one of the greatest middle-order batters we’ve ever seen.

    Another day, another hundred

Off the back of an 84 and an unbeaten match-winning 131, Mitchell peeled off another hundred. It was his 9th ODI century and the 4th against India in the format. This knock in the India vs New Zealand 3rd ODI was perhaps his best of the series.

Mitchell entered the field in the 2nd over itself. He usually starts his innings in the middle overs, when the field is spread out, and spinners generally come into play. But in Indore, he had to face on-song pacers in Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh. Mitchell decided to take his time as Will Young took the bowlers on.

He continued playing the second fiddle until Young departed in the 13th over. As Glenn Phillips came to the crease, Mitchell decided to play the role of the aggressor and let his partner get set. He registered his third consecutive score of fifty or above in the 21st over and paced himself after knowing Phillips had started to find his rhythm.

With India failing to break through, Mitchell entered autopilot mode. He took singles with ease and hit the odd boundary here and there to ensure no pressure was built. He followed this method until the 36th over, where he reached the triple figures off 106 balls.

Highest average in ODI cricket (minimum 2000 runs)

    58.95* – Daryl Mitchell (2657 runs) 58.45 – Virat Kohli (14673 runs) 56.34 – Shubman Gill (2930 runs) 53.72 – Babar Azam (6501 runs) 53.58 – Michael Bevan (6912 runs)
