Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced on Sunday, 18 January, that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
According to the Syrian Presidency, the agreement includes the following provisions:
Al-Sharaa receives Barrack
The Syrian transitional president’s announcement came after a meeting with the US Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, during which al-Sharaa affirmed Syria’s unity and sovereignty over all its territory.
He pointed to the importance of dialogue at this stage and building Syria with the participation of all Syrians, in addition to continued coordination in counterterrorism efforts.
The meeting also discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between Syria and the United States and reviewed the latest regional developments, in the presence of Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani.
Rapid field developments
Northern Syria has seen rapid field developments following a wide offensive launched by Syrian government forces on SDF-held areas. The campaign ended with the army taking control of areas west of the Euphrates in the Aleppo and Raqqa countrysides. Government forces also entered eastern Deir Ezzor countryside after tribal forces took control of the area.
The Syrian army took control of the west bank of the Euphrates after capturing the city of al-Tabqa (southwestern Raqqa) and the Euphrates Dam, after several hours of clashes at dawn on Sunday, 18 January.
In Deir Ezzor, tribal forces took control of the entire countryside after the SDF withdrew, but there has been no official announcement regarding control of Deir Ezzor city.
Tribal forces also managed to seize some areas in southern al-Hasakah countryside, such as al-Shaddadi, the town of Markada, the village of Abdan, and the al-Jabsa oil field.
