Stellan Skarsgård is a Hollywood icon, able to play serious, tortured characters just as easily as silly, lighthearted ones. However, the Sentimental Value star, 74, admits humor doesn't come as easily these days after suffering a stroke in 2022.
After forgetting his The School for Wives costar's name during a CBS News interview published on Jan. 18, he opened up about the lasting effects of the medical emergency four years ago.

"That's what I'm talking about," he said. "Had a stroke. That makes me forget my language, forget words, and that makes me more stupid and makes me less funny and everything."
The Mamma Mia star added that he "felt so funny before" the stroke, but he's not dwelling on it. "I'm 74 years old, and I'm alive," he said gratefully.
He's not just alive, he's still acting and winning awards, most recently taking home a Golden Globe for best supporting actor in Sentimental Value in early 2026. Skarsgård has learned to work around the lingering forgetfulness, like wearing an earpiece on set to help him remember his lines.
But the accommodation isn't a perfect solution. "It's actually more complicated than learning the lines, because the prompter has to say their line while the other actor is talking," he explained.

Still, Skarsgård loves acting and it seems like he'll do anything to keep making movies and TV shows. "It is like being a child," he explained. "You never grow up. You're allowed to play all the time, even as an adult. It's make-believe, and kids in the sandbox, they do it all the time. And they shouldn't stop."
His sense of childlike wonder keeps Skarsgård trying new things and pushing his boundaries when it comes to projects. "I've tried to get into projects where I enjoy myself and have a fun time. And that's why I'm not bored," he shared. "I made 150 films. I still love it, you know?"
