Career tech classes
Registration for the 2026-27 school year at the Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) center was set to open on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Nearly 1,500 students in grades 10-12 from over 45 schools in Santa Clara County enroll each year, gaining opportunities to earn college credit; score industry certifications; gain real-world experience through internships, pre-apprenticeship and projects; and advance skills for higher education or careers after graduation.

New courses this term include an AI engineering course and a pre-apprenticeship in metals technology.
Students in the former course will design intelligent systems, apply Python coding and use machine learning to solve real-world challenges.
Students enrolled in the metals technology course will have access to a newly approved Field Ironworkers Pre-Apprenticeship program, authorized by the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

Youth climate action
The Milpitas Energy and Environmental Sustainability Commission is hosting a free screening of “Youth vs. Gov” on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. at the Milpitas Library. The 2020 documentary by Christi Cooper follows 21 young Americans, ages 8-24, suing the U.S. government in Juliana v. United States for violating their constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property through policies causing the climate crisis.
The screening will be followed by a community discussion with commissioner about climate change and its impacts on the community. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
