Melissa Gilbert is standing firmly by her husband, Timothy Busfield, as he remains in custody facing serious criminal charges.
In a letter submitted to the court as part of Busfield’s opposition to the state’s motion for pretrial detention, Gilbert, 61, urged the judge to ensure her husband’s safety while he is jailed. The filing, submitted Friday, January 16, and obtained by PEOPLE, included 75 letters of support from family, friends, and colleagues.
The Little House on the Prairie alum opened her letter by identifying herself as Busfield’s wife and explaining the depths of their relationship. “The reality is that Tim Busfield is my love, my rock, my partner in business and life,” she wrote, calling him “the beating heart of our wild and wonderful extended family.”
According to the outlet, she described Busfield, 68, as someone guided by strong values, writing, “Tim has the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known.” Gilbert also cited his reputation on film sets and in classrooms, noting that she is often told he is someone’s “favorite director” or “favorite teacher.”
One of the most personal sections of the letter focused on Busfield’s bond with her youngest son, Michael, whom she said Busfield helped guide through adolescence with patience.

Gilbert also acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation: “This is the strangest letter I've ever had to write. Please, please, take care of my sweet husband.”
The director surrendered to the Albuquerque Police Department on January 13 and is currently being held without bond. He faces two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse. A pretrial detention hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20.
Busfield has denied all allegations, stating in a video obtained by TMZ, “They’re all lies and I did not do anything to those little boys and I'm gonna fight it.”
Gilbert first released a statement shortly after her husband surrendered, saying that she’s “honoring the request of Tim’s lawyers not to speak publicly while the legal process unfolds.”
