Beloved ’60s TV Star Finds Comfort in New Companion After a Difficult Year

After a year marked by loss and loneliness, Kathy Garver is sharing a deeply personal story about an unexpected new companion who has brought comfort back into her life.

The Family Affair star revealed on Facebook on Friday, Jan. 16, that she recently adopted a French bulldog named Jacqueline Chanel after a chance encounter in Palm Springs—one that unfolded at a moment when she says she had been feeling especially alone.

Garver explained that she has been grieving several losses, including the death of her husband and sister this past year, as well as the loss of her dog of 18 years the year before.

“I have been somewhat lonely since my husband and sister passed this year, and my dog of 18 years passed a year ago,” Garver wrote.

While driving from the Palm Springs International Film Festival to her brother’s home in Palm Desert, Garver says she suddenly encountered a small dog darting into the road.

“All of a sudden, a little black dog darted in front of my car,” she wrote. “I almost hit the scared, shivering bundle of fur.”

Garver pulled over, and as she stepped out of her car, the dog ran directly to her door. She helped the dog into the car, unsure what to do next, and reached out to a friend experienced with animal rescues. On his advice, she took the dog to the Palm Springs shelter.

A Reunion That Was Meant to Be

Although the dog had a microchip, Garver said the shelter later informed her that the owner wanted to surrender her.

“I couldn’t get the little dog out of my head,” Garver wrote, recalling how the dog kissed her repeatedly when she was first picked up. “I called every day for a week.”

Once the surrender was confirmed, Garver returned to Palm Springs—after stocking up on supplies—to bring the dog home.

“She was full of kisses again when I picked her up at the shelter,” Garver wrote, adding that her brother Lance and friend Yvonne were there to welcome them.

The dog, now named Jacqueline Chanel, has since settled into her new home.

“Chanel has now adjusted to her forever home with alacrity and love,” Garver shared.

Fans quickly flooded Garver’s post with messages of encouragement and joy.

“Oh Kathy, what a little bundle of love to help brighten your days. Much love,” one fan wrote.

“I couldn’t love this story more!” another commented.

Others described the moment as divinely timed.

“She found you when you both needed a forever friend,” one fan shared, while another added, “What a beautiful blessing for you both.”

A New Chapter For the Former Child Star

Garver’s time in Palm Springs was tied to a professional milestone as well. She had traveled there to attend the Palm Springs International Film Festival in support of a new documentary based on Elvis, Rocky and Me, the memoir she narrated as an audiobook—a performance that recently earned her her first-ever Grammy nomination.

The recognition has marked a meaningful late-career high point for Garver, who has spoken openly about how voice work and audiobook narration have become a fulfilling second act after decades in television and film.

Against that backdrop, the unexpected encounter with Jacqueline Chanel took on added meaning. What began as a work trip celebrating a career honor turned into something far more personal—a moment of connection and comfort during a period of grief.

For Garver, the convergence of professional celebration and personal healing underscored what she described as the timing of it all: being in the right place, for reasons both planned and unplanned, when something quietly life-changing crossed her path.
