Stranger Things Star Reveals the Show Was Her Last Audition Before Both Her Parents Died

Amybeth McNulty became a Stranger Things fan-favorite while playing Robin Buckley's girlfriend Vickie Dunne on the hit Netflix drama, but the show holds an extra special place in the 24-year-old's heart because it was the final audition she told her parents about before they both died.

    "So, my parents passed away. I know, very sad. But it's okay," she told Patrick Kielty on Ireland's The Late Late Show on Jan. 16. "[Stranger Things] was the last audition that they knew that I did. So, there was something quite exciting."

    McNulty's mother, Siobhan McNulty, died following a battle with cancer in November 2021, and her dad, Liam McNulty, died two years later on December 2023. They both "said they had a good feeling about" the Stranger Things audition, which made finally getting the role after they both died even more special for the Irish actress. "They were right, and that was that was quite nice for me," she said.

    McNulty's parents were a huge source of support for her, even packing up and leaving Ireland to bring her to Canada to she could chase her dreams. She got her big break in Netflix's Anne with an E in 2017, followed by Stranger Things in 2022.

    "They did everything [for me]," McNulty said of her parents. "From the age of 10, they're like driving me everywhere I need to go. They moved with me to Canada, lived in Toronto with me, which is mental. I was very, very lucky that they were retired and they were able to do that for me."

    "They they said they would do anything for me, and they did," said the actress. "It was really really kind. I'll always appreciate it."

    The Netflix star has honored both of her parents with posts on social media. On Nov. 18, 2021, she shared a sweet tribute to her mother, writing, "Mum, I love you. I don’t have many words, but I want the world to see how wonderful you were and how proud I am to be your daughter."

    She shared a touching message for her father in December 2025, two years after his death, calling him "everything a human being could wish to be."

    "Kind, generous, loving, a keen listener with wicked humour... and above all else, a true friend," she wrote about her father. "I would be nothing of the person I am today had I not been raised by such a quietly powerful and consistent man... Every beach has your shadow, and every performance has your voice."
