A long-awaited moment finally arrived Friday night as Suzy Bogguss was officially inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, surrounded by some of the most important people in her life and career.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, whose thoughtful, roots-forward sound helped define ’90s country, was inducted during a live Opry performance on January 16. The honor capped an emotional full-circle journey that began decades earlier when Bogguss made her Opry debut on May 12, 1989.
Bogguss opened her induction night by performing three of her signature songs—“Someday Soon,” “Aces,” and “Outbound Plane”—all Top 10 hits from her 1991 breakthrough album Aces, which earned her the CMA Horizon Award the following year.

The evening took a surprise turn when Trisha Yearwood walked onstage to congratulate her longtime friend.
“I love this woman,” Yearwood told the crowd. “It’s really an honor to be here on such a special moment. To get to be here on the night you were invited and to be here tonight is just amazing.”

Yearwood then introduced Reba McEntire, who officially inducted Bogguss into the Opry—while also celebrating her own milestone 40th anniversary as a member.
“This is so special, Suzy,” McEntire said emotionally. “This family is incredible. They are loving. This stage is very important to all of us dating many, many generations back. To be able to give you this trophy is very special to me, to everyone sitting here, and to everybody watching.”
McEntire continued, “Suzy Bogguss’s voice is like an angel’s voice. When she sings, you know it. I am so proud to give you this trophy that tells you that you are the latest member of the Grand Ole Opry. Congratulations!”

Overcome with emotion, Bogguss struggled to put the moment into words.
“I can’t even express it to you,” she said. “And you know me—I talk a lot, and I can’t even find words. This place is so special. Tonight, sitting in the circle, I feel so calm. It’s like being in the eye of the hurricane or something.”
She added, “I am so proud to be a part of this. Thank you for including me in this amazing cast, and the past cast. I feel a lot of pretty special spirits in this room right now.”
Suzy Bogguss, Trisha Yearwood, Terri Clark, Kathy Mattea and Reba McEntire perform 'Hey Cinderella' (1:34)The night ended on a celebratory note as Bogguss welcomed her “gal pals”—Terri Clark, Kathy Mattea, McEntire, and Yearwood—back to the stage for a joyful group performance of “Hey Cinderella.”
Bogguss’ induction followed a historic Opry moment last fall, when Mattea surprised her with an invitation to join the Opry during Mattea’s own induction ceremony—the first time in Opry history that an induction and invitation happened on the same night. Friday’s ceremony transformed that unforgettable surprise into a permanent place in country music history.
