ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We’re taking a little break from our very active winter weather this weekend. We’ll see some occasional snow showers, but nothing that is expected to accumulate. And temperatures will be seasonable – not terribly cold to start the weekend. Saturday sees some scattered snow showers as a clipper and system pass by. Temperatures on Saturday will likely be the mildest air we’ll feel for the next week or two, with highs into the mid 30s. Sunday starts to turn colder, as a deep trough begins to dig into the Great Lakes and Northeast. This will drop temperatures through the 20s for highs, but we’ll see some sunshine returning. This will also begin a longer duration lake effect snow even off of Lake Erie.
Winter Storm Watches are posted for Orleans, Genesee and Wyoming Counties, and areas south of Buffalo starting Sunday evening through Wednesday afternoon. That deep trough that establishes itself over the Great Lakes will produce wave after wave of cold air, and winds generally out of the southwest that will aim most of the heaviest and most persistent lake snows south of Buffalo and west of Rochester. That being said, we’ll likely see some of that Lake Erie band spray the Rochester region and parts of the western Finger Lakes from time to time.
In addition to the lake effect, we’ll get our first in a series of bitter blasts of Arctic air. This will drop our temperatures late Monday and into Wednesday morning. The wind picks up, and that’ll make the single digits and lower teens feel well below zero for wind chill values. The coldest air will likely be overhead on Tuesday.
