Phil Collins' impressive career has spawned a plethora of hits. From his time drumming with Genesis to the launch of his solo career, Collins spent decades on the charts with now-classic tracks like "Sussudio," "Land of Confusion," "I Can't Dance," and "In The Air Tonight."
And while his voice is most closely associated with the Eighties, Collins kicked off the 1990s with a major hit: "I Wish It Would Rain Down," the second single from his fourth solo album, …But Seriously. Released on Jan. 15, 1990, the song reached No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Driven by a scorching guitar lead, "I Wish It Would Rain Down" is a classic power ballad that pairs well with Collins' heartfelt vocals. And who exactly is playing guitar on the track? None other than Collins' fellow English superstars, Eric Clapton.
How Phil Collins Got Eric Clapton to Play on 'I Wish It Would Rain Down'
@officialphilcollinsPhil Collins released “I Wish It Would Rain Down” as a single on this day in 1990. The song features Eric Clapton on guitar. “I said 'Eric, have I never asked you to play? Come on, I've got a song right up your street.' And I actually did. When I wrote 'I Wish It Would Rain Down' it was as close as I got to the blues, I felt. I just knew that he'd wail away on it and he came down here and did. It was great. - Phil, 2016. Come on, I've got a song right up your street.' And I actually did," said Collins in a 1989 WEA promo interview. "When I wrote 'I Wish It Would Rain Down,' it was as close as I get to the blues, I felt. And I just ... it was kind of an Eric song, and I just knew that he'd wail away on it, and he came down here and did. It was great."
"I'm so proud to be close to him, you know. I've known him for, like, ten or eleven years now," Collins said in 1989, "but I used to collect scrapbooks on Clapton. And I've still got them. And he still says I should show them to him 'cause he probably doesn't remember half the stuff."
"I Wish It Would Rain Down" was not the first time that Collins and Clapton worked together. The "Slowhand" guitarist played on Collins' debut solo album, 1981's Face Value, lending his six-string skills to "The Roof Is Leaking" and "If Leaving Me Is Easy."
Collins also spoke about Clapton in 2016, right when Phil was in the midst of reissuing all his solo albums. "I had Eric come down to the studio to re-record the [Face Value] song, 'The Roof Is Leaking,'" Collins told Digital Trends. "And I missed the plot there — I lost the plot, really."
What he does on that song's demo — you can hear it on the [Extra Values] bonus disc, mastered from a cassette — is what it should be," said Clapton, "and also what he did in the studio is what it should be. I had wanted him to do the same thing each time."
Phil Collins retired from performing in 2022 due to ongoing health issues. In 2007, Collins suffered a spinal injury that caused nerve damage. He's living with "foot drop," an underlying neurological problem that requires him to walk with a cane.
Collings gave an update in February 2025, saying his health problems make it difficult for him to pick up a drumstick.
