Patients in the PIH Health network can get free rides to PIH Whittier Hospital, PIH Health Downey Hospital, and PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, as well as related medical office buildings throughout Los Angeles County.
PIH Health Foundation received a $75,000 grant from QueensCare to expand free non-emergency transportation services for qualified patients receiving care across the nonprofit healthcare network, foundation officials announced on Jan. 14.
“Transportation should never be a barrier to receiving quality healthcare,” said Dr. Erin Jackson-Ward, president and CEO of QueensCare, which provides healthcare for low-income families and individuals in Los Angeles County. “By supporting PIH Health’s transportation services, we are helping ensure patients stay engaged in their care and maintain independence, particularly those who are disproportionately affected.”
Reliable transportation remains one of the most critical—and often overlooked—determinants of health, according to Brent Melton, PIH Health vice president of support services.
“For many patients, particularly seniors and individuals with disabilities, lack of transportation can lead to missed appointments, delayed care, and poorer health outcomes,” Melton said. “This grant helps ensure that vulnerable patients can access essential medical services safely, consistently, and with dignity.”
The grant also reflects the long-standing partnership between QueensCare and PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, a collaboration of more than 25 years based on a shared mission to improve access to compassionate, high-quality care for underserved communities in Los Angeles.
Amy Fitzgerald, vice president of the PIH Health Foundation, said she appreciates the partnership and QueensCare’s continued commitment to patients, saying the grant helps “remove a significant barrier to care for patients who need it most.”
Free transportation is arranged directly by hospital or office staff for the patient.
With this funding, PIH Health Foundation will strengthen its transportation programs, supporting access to preventive care, follow-up visits, diagnostic services, and ongoing treatment across hospital and outpatient settings. Patients are transported home or to their next destination from the hospital and also to-and-from transportation for outpatient appointments such as radiation oncology.
Many patients using this service would likely not receive their much-needed care without transportation assistance, Melton said. The grant will allow the transportation service to expand to PIH Health Downey Hospital and PIH Health Whittier Hospital.
