BUFFALO, N.Y. — A former basketball player for the University at Buffalo has been indicted by a grand jury in Pennsylvania in connection to a betting scheme to rig NCAA and Chinese Basketball Association games.
According to News10NBC’s affiliate in Buffalo, records show Shawn Fulcher is one of over 20 people accused of intentionally rigging college basketball games. Fulcher and the other defendants face charges such as bribery, wire fraud, and conspiracy.
Prosecutors say the scheme generally revolved around gamblers, or “fixers,” placing bets and recruiting players with the promise of a big payment in exchange for purposely underperforming during games. They say those fixers would then bet against the players’ teams in those games.
Former UB Bull Isiah Adams and another UB player listed as “player #5” have also been named in the indictment, but aren’t in the list of players facing charges.
The indictment says Fulcher and the other two players are accused of intentionally rigging the outcome of games between February and March of 2024. It is believed they got at least $54,000 in bribe payments.
In a statement to our Buffalo affiliate, the University at Buffalo said the following:
“We are aware of these deeply concerning allegations. We believe these to be isolated incidents that in no way reflect the values and core ethics of the Division of Athletics or our men’s basketball program. Our department will continue to cooperate fully with the investigating authorities. Preserving the integrity and fairness of sport is a responsibility we take very seriously. The two former student-athletes named in the indictment are no longer enrolled at UB and transferred to other programs after the 2023-24 season. With the investigation ongoing, UB Athletics will have no further comment at this time.”
Fulcher played for UB during the 2023-24 season. He later played for the Alabama State Hornets during the 2024-25 season.
