After a brief detour in the Chicago White Sox organization, infielder Benjamin Cowles is back in the Chicago Cubs organization. The Cubs claimed the 25-year-old off of waivers, and their 40-man roster is now a full 40. Any additional moves on that front will require maneuvering.
Cowles, together with reliever Jack Neely, was the return in the Mark Leiter Jr. trade at the deadline in 2024. He struggled upon arriving at Triple-A in 2025, and was ultimately bumped off the 40-man roster in September, which is how the White Sox claimed him in the first place. Now the shoe is on the other foot, and Cowles is back with the Cubs.
For now, Cowles would be additional utility infield depth at Triple-A Iowa, joining a relatively robust group that includes James Triantos, Pedro Ramirez, Scott Kingery, Hayden Cantrelle, Ed Howard, and Devin Ortiz. It’s more volume than impact, though obviously there are big league hopes for Triantos and Ramirez, who were recently added to the 40-man roster. If the Cubs were to deal someone like Matt Shaw, then they would probably want the extra depth available just in case.
Cowles is a solid defender, capable of playing all over the infield, so he wouldn’t have to hit a lot to have some value. To date, though, he hasn’t been able to put it together a Triple-A, much less in MLB.
All that said, I could see the Cubs trying to sneak Cowles through waivers later this offseason, attempting to outright him to Iowa. Keep him in the organization, but not on the 40-man roster.
