Why wont there be a Power Book IV: Force season 4?

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Power Book IV: Force season 3.*

The Power universe may be expansive but now it's time to bid farewell to one series as Power Book IV: Force has drawn to a close. Season 3 was no less dramatic and gripping as its previous two seasons, bowing out on an expectantly positive note as Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora) ponders about his future with Tariq St Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr).

Having now conquered Chicago, Tommy's future is looking bright – and with Tariq trying to convince him to return to New York, it lays the foundations for Power's upcoming spin-off series, Power: Legacy.

Many were left wondering just whether Tommy would make it out of Power Book IV: Force alive but with reports that Power: Legacy is set to see him lead the cast alongside Rainey Jr, that thankfully wasn't the case and Tommy lived to fight another day. But seeing as Force earned its own captivated audience, just why is the series coming to an end?

    Read on to find out.

Why won't there be a Power Book IV: Force season 4?

In short, there won't be a fourth season of Power Book IV: Force due to a change of direction and financial decision-making at Starz.

In March 2024, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch revealed plans to "contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive", as per Deadline. So, that means that rather than building up their pre-existing shows with more seasons, they're looking to develop fresh, new spin-offs instead.

That news came just days before prequel series Power: Origins was announced, which will follow the early years of best friends and business partners Ghost and Tommy, who were originally played by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora in the original series. It's now actually been confirmed that Charlie Mann and Spence Moore II will be tackling those leading roles, respectively.

Showrunner Sascha Penn said in a statement about Origins: “I’m excited to continue to explore the origin stories of the Power Universe’s founding fathers.

“Ghost and Tommy’s backstories have fuelled years of constant fascination and speculation among fans, and I’m thrilled to be able to answer some long-held questions and share new layers of the story that viewers won’t see coming.”

Power Book IV: Force isn't the only Power series to reach its end, with Power Book II: Ghost having also ended with four seasons in 2024. Speaking about the end of Power Book IV: Force, showrunner Gary Lennon said in a statement: “It is bittersweet to write the fulfilling ending of this chapter in Tommy’s journey, a character myself and fans have grown to love over the past decade.

“Season 3 will question everything we thought we knew of Tommy’s world and I promise you it will not disappoint! Although this may be the end of the road for Force, there is much more expansive, compelling storytelling for the characters within the Power Universe.”

While some fans may be saddened to hear of Power Book IV: Force coming to an end with season 3, the finale certainly set up the future of the franchise with an appearance from Tariq.

The finale saw Tariq ask Tommy if he’s ready to “start some new s**t” which led to Tommy replying: “Hell yeah, I’m ready.” So, that certainly sets us up for more action for the pair!

As of now, no official announcements have been made about Power: Legacy but Deadline reported last year that a writer's room for the series was opened for the series, which will follow a present-day timeline.

Power Book IV: Force seasons 1-3 are available to stream on MGM+.
