It's hard to think of a more iconic Hollywood friendship than the one between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The two Massachusetts natives have been close pals from before either entered the film industry and have appeared together on several occasions throughout their careers – from 1997 classic Good Will Hunting (which they also co-wrote) to 2023 sports drama Air (which Affleck directed).
This week, they're back on screen together once again in The Rip, a new Netflix crime thriller from writer/director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Copland). In the film, they play two partners in the Miami police who discover millions of pounds during an operation, shortly after one of their colleagues had been shot dead in suspicious circumstances.
The official synopsis reads: "Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on."
The cast also includes recent Golden Globe winner Teyana Taylor and Beef star Steven Yeun, so there's certainly no shortage of star power on display.

Is Netflix crime thriller The Rip based on a true story?
Yes, but only loosely. Although the film does not appear to be totally accurate retelling of a specific incident, it is inspired by real events which took place in Miami – as is revealed in on screen text at the beginning of the movie.
Indeed, writer/director Joe Carnahan explained that the inspiration for his script came from the experiences of one of his friend, telling Tudum: "The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami Dade police department."
But he added that although it was inspired "in part by his life", he also looked to some cinema classics from yesteryear when he was crafting the film.
"My enduring love for those classic ‘70's cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era," he said. "Films like Serpico and Prince of The City and more recently, Michael Mann's Heat.”
In other words, the basis for the script is a true story, but it's also been given something of a Hollywood makeover.
View Green Video on the source websiteMore specific details about the exact story the film draws from have not been made available at this stage, but it seems possible that inspiration was also taken from the Miami River Cops scandal in the 1980s, which saw a group of corrupt officers – who had been seizing huge quantities of stolen drug money among other crimes – exposed when three of the cops drowned while attempting an escape.
The Rip is set in the modern day and the plot doesn't quite match up to those events – it's certainly not a direct retelling – but there are definite parallels, and this case was surely somewhere in Carnahan's mind when he was drafting the screenplay.
Meanwhile, one other aspect of the film which is based in reality – although in a different sort of way – is that the characters played by Damon and Affleck are longtime friends, something which of course reflects the real relationship between the two actors. This was something which Affleck believed fed directly into the film.
"Joe [Carnahan], I think, wisely took advantage of... if you know who Matt or I are, you're probably familiar also with the fact that we're friends, and that actually can be quite helpful.," he told Parade.
"Like, take the baggage that people bring to it and use it. Rather than having to spend time at the beginning of the movie with exposition, sort of crudely demonstrating, 'Oh look, now we're showing you how close these friends are.'"
The Rip is now streaming on Netflix.
