Psychological thriller ‘Khoroog Amen’ to compete at the Berlin International Film Festival

The psychological thriller “Khoroog Amen” (Safe Exit), directed by Mohamed Hammad, participated in the 76th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), held from February 12 to 22, as part of the prestigious Panorama section. The film is a multilateral co-production between Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Qatar, and Germany.

“Khoroog Amen” follows the story of a young security guard struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)following the murder of his father by an extremist terrorist organization. The film unfolds as a poignant human journey that explores how systemic violence fractures the simplest details of daily life.

Commenting on the project, director Mohamed Hammad stated that the movie examines the impact of monumental events on the private lives of ordinary individuals—capturing their small victories, heartbreaks, fears, and human vulnerabilities. He emphasized that the film provides a space to contemplate humanity as a bridge toward coexistence, despite deep-seated differences.

Producer Dora Bouchoucha noted that the film “delves into the unresolved traumas of generations burdened by identity-based violence,” highlighting the sensitivity and human depth of the narrative. Producer Kholoud Saad added: “Following our collaboration with Mohamed Hammad on Withered Green, it was a natural step to work with him again on a project that addresses human rights issues so directly. We are immensely proud of the final result.”

Hammad further noted that he co-founded an independent production house with Kholoud Saad, aimed at producing self-funded films that tackle complex social issues rarely addressed in Egyptian cinema. He pointed out that “Khoroog Amen” analyzes the underlying factors and beliefs that can drive acts of violence committed in the name of religion.

Dina Farouk stated that the film explores the “silent aftermath of violence—what happens once the media spotlight fades.” She emphasized that the work treats trauma as a lived, inherited, and deeply personal experience, rather than a mere dramatic spectacle.

The film is written, directed, and produced by Mohamed Hammad, with Kholoud Saad and Dora Bouchoucha serving as producers. Co-producers include Dina Farouk, Ibrahim El-Batout, and May Odeh.

The cast features Marwan Walid, Noha Fouad, and Hazem Essam. The technical crew includes cinematographer Mohamed El-Sharkawy, editor Dina Farouk, and art direction by Mohamed Hammad and Nora Fawzy.
