Oklahoma announced on Thursday that both of its No. 10s, quarterback John Mateer and linebacker Kip Lewis, will return to the school for the 2026 season.
Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III also hinted at his return in a post on his personal Instagram page. None of the 3 Sooners were included on the list of underclassmen in the 2026 NFL Draft that the league revealed on Thursday, signaling they would at least be back in college next season. Prior to breaking a bone in his hand, there was some buzz that Mateer could be one of the top quarterbacks selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. He was also leading the race for the Heisman Trophy when he left the starting lineup.
The Washington State transfer led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff in his first season with the program, throwing for 2,885 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 12 appearances.
He also ran for 431 yards and 8 touchdowns. He led the team in both rushing scores and attempts.
But Mateer was not the same player once he returned from the hand injury on Oct. 11. Through his first 4 starts, Mateer averaged 303.8 yards per game through the air with 6 touchdowns and 3 picks.
He missed the win over Kent State on Oct. 4, then returned for the Red River Shootout with Texas the following weekend. In that game, Mateer completed 53% of his passes with no touchdowns and 3 picks.
Mateer also had 3 interceptions in the 17-13 win over LSU to end the regular season, and his pick-6 late in the first half of the first-round loss to Alabama flipped momentum in a game during which the Sooners raced out to an early 17-0 lead.
Another season with the Sooners could help to rebuild Mateer’s draft stock ahead of the 2027 NFL Draft.
Sategna was his favorite receiver, with a 67-catch campaign for 965 yards and 8 scores. He was OU’s top receiver in all 3 categories.
Lewis, a junior, led the defense in tackles (76). He also had 10.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 4 pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
