The Bulls Are “Aggressively Shopping” Patrick Williams, But … You Know the Rest

The NBA trade rumor mill is on fire right now, and right in the middle of it are the Chicago Bulls and their very desirable pile of expiring contracts. One name, however, reportedly isn’t moving the needle at all, Patrick Williams.

Evan Sidery reported that the Bulls have been aggressively shopping Williams in trade talks, but so far no team “appears interested.”

In other news, the sky is blue.

So why does no one want Patrick Williams?

    Because he’s been bad.

Not just by the eye test, either. The numbers, the percentages, the contract, all of it points the same way. And that’s me saying this after one of his better games this season. Williams is a 24-year-old, 6’6” power forward, a former fourth overall pick, who somehow plays like a 5’4 undrafted G-Leaguer.

He’s averaging career lows in points, rebounds, steals, blocks, and shooting efficiency, including a brutal 34% from inside the arc despite being one of the team’s “bigs.” You can point to the reduced minutes, sure, but those minutes are being taken away because of the production, or lack of it.

Another big reason for that is his contract. He’s in the second year of a five-year, $90 million extension. It might not be the biggest deal in the league, but it’s definitely in the conversation for one of the worst this season.

To put that into perspective, he’s averaged eight points per game since signing it and has already made about $36 million in that span. That comes out to roughly $44,280 per point scored — which is a lot of money for very little production.

Now, is that Patrick’s fault? Not really.

He didn’t ask to be drafted higher than where he was projected; the Bulls made that decision. He didn’t demand a contract extension before hitting the open market; the Bulls offered it. And he didn’t tank his already fragile trade value; the Bulls did that, too.

So, no, this isn’t really on Patrick Williams. It’s on the Chicago Bulls. And now they’re trying to ship him out anyway, only to find out that nobody is biting.

    3 Semi-Realistic Patrick Williams Trade

Trade for the Paul George Contract via ESPN NBA Trade Machine

The Bulls would take on the even worse contract of Paul George, while giving the 76ers flexibility through expiring deals.

    2. Trade for the Jerami Grant contract

    via ESPN NBA Trade Machine

Another shaky option would be taking on Jerami Grant’s contract, more money, but in exchange the Trail Blazers would get their protected pick back and get an expiring deal.

    3. Bring Zach LaVine Back Home

    via ESPN NBA Trade Machine

The Sacramento Kings have been quietly shopping some of their bad contracts, and giving them a chance to partially undo the Zach LaVine trade might be something they’d actually consider.

None of these trades are likely, but with Patrick Williams’ current trade value, these are the kinds of conversations you’re stuck having.
