ANTIOCH — A 23-year-old man has been charged with attempting to murder an 11-year-old girl who survived being shot in the head while riding around town with her family, police announced Thursday.
Ryan Hardy, of Antioch, was charged with five counts of attempted murder and assault with a firearm for allegedly shooting the girl in the early afternoon of Jan. 5, as she rode in a car on the 3900 block of Delta Fair Boulevard, police said. Hardy has not yet entered a plea and remains jailed after turning himself in on Jan. 12, court records show.
Prosecutors filed one count of attempted murder for each of the car’s occupants, authorities said.
Police say Hardy mistook a member of the girl’s family for a person he wanted to shoot an opened fire on the vehicle, and that none of the car’s occupants had any relation to the intended target. The girl was rushed to a hospital in Oakland and treated for the headshot. She is expected to recover.
Hardy was publicly identified as a suspect after the shooting, and turned himself in after his picture was widely broadcast. At the time, police warned members of the public they’d seek criminal charges against anyone who harbored him.
