Nick Reiner reportedly switched the medication he was taking to treat his schizophrenia one month before his parents Rob and Michele Reiner were murdered.
According to an article published in The New York Times on Thursday, Jan. 15, Nick had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder and appeared to be "struggling" in the weeks prior to the killings after switching his medication.
The publication said the medication was effective, but was changed after Nick experienced undisclosed side effects. The article also revealed that the 32-year-old was previously in a mental health conservatorship from 2020 to 2021.
Steven Baer, the licensed fiduciary who was appointed as Nick's conservator, told the Times that mental illness “is an epidemic that is widely misunderstood and this is a horrible tragedy.”

News of Nick's alleged schizophrenia diagnosis first broke in December 2025. At the time, TMZ reported in the weeks leading up to the murder of his parents, Nick was acting “erratic and dangerous.”
Two sources told the publication that Nick was under the care of a psychiatrist for his mental illness, but in the month preceding the murders, Nick’s behavior had allegedly become “alarming.”
The sources echoed the statements in the Times article, claiming that doctors changed Nick’s medication roughly 3-4 weeks before his parents’ deaths in hopes of stabilizing his condition, which they believe caused his sudden change in behavior. The sources also allege that Nick’s substance abuse worsened his schizophrenia.
Nick also reportedly received treatment at a $70,000/month Los Angeles-based rehab facility that specializes in mental illness and substance abuse shortly before his parents' deaths.
