This Just In: A Mosaic of Panic

This Just In — The wheels are coming off.

In the last week, there has been an amazing flurry of illegality flowing from the Trump Administration. Amazing – not in the good way.

    An incomplete list:

Following the fatal shooting of a civilian (Renée Good) in Minneapolis, the President and the Secretary of Homeland Security made false, defamatory statements about the victim calling her a terrorist among other things. The President repeatedly threatened a takeover of Greenland, a sovereign nation and NATO ally. His predicate was that if the U.S. doesn’t take over Greenland, Russia will do so and we cannot have Russia “as a neighbor.” Perhaps someone could spare a map of Alaska for the president. In an outrageous violation of Justice Department policy, an announcement was made about a criminal investigation being opened against Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Clearly the DOJ’s new policy is if we have the facts to indict you, we’ll indict you. If we don’t have the facts to indict you, we’ll name you to disparage you. Powell is one of the only people we’ve ever seen to push back against Trump in real time on his false statements of facts. He’s a tough guy—a real one. Because the word came down from the DOJ in Washington that a (completely unjustified) criminal investigation should be opened against the widow of Renee Good, several attorneys in the US Attorney’s office in Minnesota resigned their positions, refusing the harass a grieving family with false accusations. Making it clear that federal authorities will refuse to prosecute the shooter in Minneapolis, they nevertheless have refused to allow the State of Minnesota to cooperate in any investigation and have removed the vehicle (a crime scene) and the gun.

All of these things happened over the weekend. On Tuesday, an auto worker shouted to the president that he was a “pedophile protector.” He got a “F*ck you” and middle finger from the president for that. From his employer, he got a suspension (“pending investigation”), which he says was worth it.

These events also follow a substantial series (too many to list) of losses for Trump in federal courts, blocking him from blocking federal funds from flowing to blue states simply because they are blue states. That’s illegal, say the judges.

Rather quietly (relative to the scheme of things), the Senate has voted to restore several elements of funding that were stripped out in the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” Thanks to a discharge petition, the House has passed a bill restoring the Affordable Care Act’s tax credits and this moves to the Senate, where it may just PASS.

We are now in the season where elected GOP officials must consider if taking a knee to Trump is worth ending their careers. The ground has shifted significantly. The pressure on the House of Representatives to start acting like they work for the people is hard to overstate.

Renee Good lost her life less than a mile from where George Floyd was murdered. In that case, the state’s Attorney General Keith Ellison took over the investigation and got a conviction. We should hold hope that a grand jury is soon going to announce a true bill of indictment against the shooter in the Good case and that he will stand trial for this homicide. If a grand jury is working on that right now, it would be (appropriately) done in secret. Given the federal government’s willingness to obstruct justice, it will be a difficult case that may take a long time, but there’s no statute of limitations on murder and a cover up after the fact can make for many more defendants as accessories.

I have a lot of faith in the people of Minnesota who have demonstrated extraordinary courage and resolve in this new year. They are America’s best example of patriotism and the benefit of the rule of law.
