Having officially been signed by the Chicago Cubs to one of the largest contracts in franchise history, Alex Bregman is being introduced today via press conference at Wrigley Field. He’ll get his new number three jersey, some effusive things will be said, and we’ll all have an opportunity to enjoy a huge moment of the type we seem to only rarely get.
I also tentatively expect we’ll get some thoughts from the front office, not only on the Alex Bregman signing, but also the Edward Cabrera trade, the offseason as a whole, and the season ahead.

Jed Hoyer opens by welcoming Bregman’s family by name, and thanking Scott Boras for the negotiation back and forth (joking that it was a lot of back and forth), and the work that goes into making players better. That’s the focus when they’re getting a deal together. He thanks the Ricketts Family also, as they are present, too.
Hoyer is offering up the expected extreme praise of the newest Cub, focused primarily on all the things that he does outside of his performance on the field. How he works with teammates, how he shows up every day, etc. Every account of Bregman throughout his baseball career was that he was truly an incredible teammate. Every day is thinking about preparation, winning, and playing the right way. Himself, and his teammates. That’s why the Cubs were comfortable making such a big commitment.
