Timothée Chalamet is opening up about an intense encounter while filming Josh Safdie’s ping-pong drama Marty Supreme. Without naming the individual, the actor revealed that a background performer threatened him after he got in their face to draw out the necessary emotion for a scene.
With Dune 3and Avengers: Doomsday releasing on the same day this year, Robert Downey Jr. and Chalamet got together for a Marty Supreme Q&A, according to People. The 30-year-old actor broke down the motel scene in the movie that involved a frenzied Chalament, a motel clerk, a collapsing ceiling, and a falling bathtub, causing a chaotic scene with a broken arm.
While Marty Supreme does have a star-studded cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow, it did use a lot of background actors and fresh faces. One of them caused a bit of a stir.
"I won't say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors…that I find it really thrilling to work with, but sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them," explained Chalamet.
"And I'm really getting in the guy's face and I'm really trying to get him angry with me. I was saying to Josh [Safdie, the movie’s director], he’s not getting angry with me, he's not getting angry with me."
It appears that Chalamet's commitment to getting the right emotion for the scene didn't sit well with the background actor. When re-shooting the scene, they ended up threatening the Dune actor.
"I did another take, and then the guy said, 'I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don't want to f--k with me. You don't want to see me angry,'" said Chalamet.
He ended the story with a nervous laugh and said how the encounter had him jokingly asking Safdie who he hired to star opposite him. While Chalamet doesn't reveal who the actor was, anyone who watches Marty Supreme can take an educated guess. A look at the cast roster reveals that many of the actors who appeared regularly have a handful of acting credits.
