Born in May 1952, George Strait is one of the best-selling country artists of all time.
The Texas native often sings about his homeland, with one song in particular reaching heights unknown.
His 1983 single, "Amarillo by Morning", once made its way to outer space.
The original version of the song was co-written by Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser, and recorded by Stafford.
In June 1982, Strait, 73, dropped his Strait from the Heart album, which included his rendition of the song. It wasn't until January of the following year that Strait's "Amarillo by Morning" was released as a single, running to the top of the country charts.
American astronaut Rick Husband reportedly loved the song, perhaps finding comfort in the lyrics as an Amarillo native.
On Friday, February 1, 2003, the U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia tragically collapsed on its way back into the Earth's atmosphere.
Husband was one of the seven astronauts on board at the time, with all crew members dying.
This had been Columbia's 28th flight, and had spent just over two weeks in outer space.
"Rick was so proud of being from Amarillo that in the mornings they let the astronauts pick their wake up music," said Husband's friend, Ellen Robertson Green, per News Channel 10.
"And when it was Rick's turn, he picked 'Amarillo By Morning.'"
Former Amarillo mayor, Trent Sisemore, added: "Because he had Amarillo roots. He had Amarillo values."
"He was a man of integrity, he loved the things that are important to a lot of people in this community—family, the Lord," continued Sisemore.
After his passing, the Amarillo airport was renamed as the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.
A nine-foot-tall statue of the beloved astronaut was also erected.
"It gives people a chance to pause and to find out who he was if they don't know who he was," said Green.
Sisemore added: "There was a great man from Amarillo who achieved the ultimate success in his field, and died doing that. And that airport is a reminder of that success and that intuitiveness and that hard work that he gave to our nation and our world."
