As one of the most accomplished musicians of the late 20th and early 21st century, Paul McCartney has had numerous musical hits in both his solo career and his tenure in past iconic bands like the Beatles and the Wings.
In regards to the latter group, McCartney famously released some of the best musical tracks of the '70s and '80s, including such chart-topping tunes as "Band on the Run," "Jet," "Live and Let Die" and so many others.
Yet in McCartney's view, the best single the band ever released came with a comparatively little-known song released in 1972, which McCartney once called one of the major highlights of the Wings' discography.
According to Far Out Magazine, McCartney told the authors of 2009's The Beatles: Off The Record that he regarded 1972's "Hi, Hi, Hi" as one of the Wings' greatest musical achievements, as well as the best single the group ever produced.
"To me, it was just a song to close our act, and since it went down well when we toured the continent, I thought it would be a good single," McCartney said of the song. "I think it’s the best single we’ve done as Wings."
Co-written by McCartney and his then-wife Linda, "Hi, Hi, Hi" arrived in late 1972 between the Wings' work on their first album release, 1971's Wild Life, and their second album, 1973's Red Rose Speedway.
Released as a double A-side single with the song "C Moon," "Hi, Hi, Hi" met with an altogether positive response from fans and critics alike. Due to the "suggestive lyrics" of the song, the single was initially banned by the BBC, although McCartney said the network simply misinterpreted some of "Hi, Hi, Hi"'s lyrics.
"The BBC got some of the words wrong," McCartney said in The Beatles: Off The Record. "But I suppose it is a bit of a dirty song if sex is dirty and naughty. I was in a sensuous mood in Spain when I wrote it."
