90s Rock Legend Announces First Solo Tour in 7 Years

While Pearl Jam has been one of the biggest rock bands in the world for decades now, frontman Eddie Vedder is a prolific solo artist, too. Now, following the exit of Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, Vedder is planning his first solo tour since the summer of 2019.

As SPIN reported, Vedder is heading to Japan this spring for the first time on his own. He hasn't been to the region with Pearl Jam since 2003 (though he made an unexpected appearance last March to perform "Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young with Jack White).

Vedder is scheduled to play a series of four theater shows in Japan starting on April 14 in Nagoya, with additional dates on April 16 in Osaka, April 17 in Kyoto and April 20 in Tokyo. Tickets will be available for sale on Feb. 14.

According to an Instagram post from Vedder's official account, "the tour will give audiences a unique opportunity to experience Eddie’s solo work and career-spanning material in a theater setting."

These dates represent a rare opportunity indeed, as Vedder's non-Pearl Jam dates in recent years have included his band Earthlings (featuring Andrew Watt, Josh Klinghoffer, Chad Smith and Glen Hansard).

Eddie Vedder credits Neil Young with helping him manage success

In a 2024 interview with The Times, Vedder opened up about how Pearl Jam's meteoric rise to fame was difficult to handle for the band.

“We didn’t know how to behave,” Vedder admitted. “We didn’t know how to deal with what we were going through. It certainly wasn’t anything we were able to celebrate. It was kind of terrifying, actually.”

Lessons learned from Young, who hired Pearl Jam as his backing band for 1995’s Mirror Ball, helped to give Vedder perspective.

“To see someone who was on the other side of it all, who was carrying on regardless, made us realize that none of the stuff we were going through really mattered,” Vedder said. “Neil is mercurial, he moves fast, and more than anyone else I’ve encountered he is always in contact with his muse. I wish we could have dealt with our success more gracefully, but at the same time our reaction was authentic and watching Neil in action helped us see the value in that.”
