GATES, N.Y. — A male is in custody after hiding from police in woods and brush near the Erie Canal after being stopped by a Gates police officer.
According to a Gates sergeant, the officer had stopped the man on Lyell Avenue on suspicion of solicitation at about 5:20 p.m. He was on a bicycle and sped off toward the canal, then running into the woods near the canal. The officer chased him but lost sight of him.
A search ensured, with the Gates Fire Department supporting the effort, in case the situation turned out to be a water rescue. The suspect was found in the brush, having never gone into the water. He was taken to the hospital to be checked for exposure, after having been out in the cold for about an hour.
