The running game is at the heart of what Ben Johnson’s offensive scheme is all about.
Unfortunately, it has struggled to gain traction of late.
In the Bears’ playoff win against the Packers, Chicago’s offense mustered just 93 yards on the ground against Green Bay’s defense. The week prior, the rushing attack collected only 65 yards — which represented the fewerst ground yards gained by the offense this season. Don’t get me wrong. I love that quarterback Caleb Williams was able to air it out en route to delivering a thrilling come-from-behind win against the Packers. However, the Bears need to do a better job of playing ahead of the sticks — and that starts with establishing the run.

“It’s not something that we want late in the season,” said Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson when discussing the run game’s struggles. “We want that to pick up in the playoffs. Weather games like this, you certainly want to be able to lean on your run game. So those are some elements we’re looking at. What can we do to help ignite that? It’s both efficient runs, to stay on track and ahead of the chains, and explosive runs aw well.”
Syndication: The Post-CrescentWitnessing Quarterback Caleb Williams taking steps forward in his development has been fun. Watching rookie tight end Colston Loveland get better with each passing week has been a treat. Seeing Luther Burden III, another rookie, taking his game to another level has brought me joy. Getting wide receiver DJ Moore more involved down the stretch has been a revalation. But let’s not get it twisted. The heart and soul of Chicago’s offense is its running game.
THE FIRST CHICAGO BEARS INJURY REPORT OF THE WEEK IS OUT
The Bears offense finished the regular season with the third-most rushing yards (on the fifth-most attempts) and ninth-most groud scores. Chicago’s committmemnt to the run has opened up the play-action passing game for Caleb Williams, who has a 5.3 TD% on play-action throws this season. And the mere threat of the ground-and-pound game has opened up some passing lanes over the middle, which is an area Williams has attacked successfully at times throughout the year.
Other highlights from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s press conference
More from the Bears head coach…
Ben Johnson on the Rams defense: “I think the front is their strength. These guys at the line of scrimmage are really good football players. They shed blocks at an elite level. They are relentless. They are violent across the board. So I have a lot of respect for them and we have to be on our A-game to run it against this crew.” On the Rams as a whole: “The more tape you watch, the more respect you have for them. They’ve had an incredible season so far. They’re really sound, really talented, really well-coached across the board. We’ll have our work cut out for us, but the challenge we’ll look forward to.”FORMER NFL QB THINKS RAMS “MIGHT HANG 50” ON THE BEARS
On Matthew Stafford: “He’s playing at a MVP level. I think that’s going to be our challenge. We gotta have guys step up this week, both up front and on the back end, to make things as difficult as we possibly can as we him for him. So whether that’s bring pressure, whether that’s play coverage and depend on our front four to get after him.” My favorite quote from Wednesday’s press conference: “It’s one of those things where it’s going to take everybody. It’s going to take our defense playing good football for 60 minutes. And it’s going to take our offense being able to keep up with an offense of this caliber as well.”For more from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson, you can watch the video below:
