The guitarist shared an Instagram tribute on January 14, 2026. is full of memories of them not taking themselves too seriously. It's hard to imagine that at the time, they knew how iconic they would become and have devoted Deadheads to this day. The gallery of photos in the post showed the friends throughout the decades.

"During those first rehearsals, which were in the back of a music shop, Bob and I would smoke joints in the back alley, before, during, and after — we had to be careful because it was still taboo back then," Kreutzmann wrote. Weir was 17 years old at the time, and Kreutzmann was 18. They also did playful things that were legal, like throwing water balloons. Of course, they were most passionate about listening to music.

"It was basically like our religion," he explained. "Sometimes we’d take STP and sit there and turn the lights down low and the back of the amplifier would glow like a cathedral as we’d listen to the music." He ended the tribute with, "Time has proven that nobody will ever be able to replace Jerry Garcia — or Phil Lesh — and time will prove the same for Bob Weir."

Kreutzmann is the last surviving original member of the band. He continues to perform for their devoted fans. One of his last posts with Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart and Weir was in 2024 when they were honored by The Kennedy Center.
