The Chicago Cubs have officially signed three-time All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman to one of the richest deals in team history.
Bregman, who won the World Series with the Houston Astros in 2017 and 2022, signed a five-year contract with the Cubs, and will officially be introduced to media on Thursday, according to the team.
The Cubs did not disclose terms of the contract, but Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the deal at five years and $175 million, with some deferrals and a full no-trade clause.
That contract would be the third-richest by overall value in Cubs history, narrowly trailing Jason Heyward ($185 million) and Dansby Swanson ($177 million).
According to the Cubs, Bregman will wear the No. 3 jersey for the team in the 2026 season. He has worn the No. 2 throughout his MLB career as a nod to the fact he was the second-overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft
Bregman, who will turn 32 before the season, was a target of the Cubs during last year’s offseason before he inked a contract with the Boston Red Sox.
He had a strong season in Boston, hitting 18 home runs and driving in 62 RBI’s while slashing .273/.360/.462. He made yet another All-Star team in the process, and opted out of his contract with Boston after the season.
It would appear likely that Bregman will play third base for the Cubs in the 2026 season, with Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner and Michael Busch rounding out the team’s infield.
There have been rumors swirling around the Cubs receiving trade interest for Hoerner’s services, but the team has not made any indication that they’re planning on moving on from him.
The team will introduce Bregman to fans at this weekend’s Cubs Convention in Chicago, with opening ceremonies set for Friday.
