The Iconic Grateful Dead Song Bob Weir Wanted Played At His Funeral

Like any classic rock band, the Grateful Dead had no shortage of well-loved songs making up their decades-long discography, including such fabled hits as "Truckin'", "Ripple", "Touch of Grey" and so many, many more.

Yet in an interview with Dan Rather on AXS TV Series' The Big Interview, founding member Bob Weir revealed that the only Grateful Dead song he wanted played at his funeral was the band's 1972 song, "Cassidy" (via Rolling Stone).

Written by John Barlow and Weir, "Cassidy" appears on the Grateful Dead's critically well-received album, Ace, alongside other notable hits like "Mexicali Blues" and "One More Saturday Night."

At one point during their interview together, Rather asked Weir what he hopes he'll be remembered for when he passes away. Instead of naming a specific song, Weir instead said he'd like to be associated with any positive memories listeners have attached to any of his or his band's songs.

“Individually, for people who want to remember me, to remember on the moment for a song that relates to that moment for them, because that’s all I’m here for,” Weir answered.

The musician continued on by pointing to to the song "Cassidy" as the song he'd like played at his memorial service, quoting the lyrics to the popular '70s tune: “I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream. I can tell by the mark he left you were in his dream. Ah, child of countless trees. Ah, child of boundless seas. What you are, what you’re meant to be. Speaks his name, though you were born to me. Cassidy.”

One of the principal members of the Grateful Dead from 1965 to 1995, Weir has earned numerous accolades within the larger music industry, including a 1994 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band.

On January 10, 2026, the musician passed away from underlying lung issues at the age of 78.
