We are under a month from pitchers and catchers officially reporting to Spring Training, though obviously many guys have been there for a long time getting in their work …

Very good to see these lefties throwing:

    — Rich Biesterfeld (@biest22) January 13, 2026 Justin Steele is rehabbing his elbow surgery, and our hopes are that he could be back in the big league rotation come sometime in June. Every clip I see makes me happy. Luke Little had some injury issues last year, but also some real inconsistency. You hope for a step forward, because his is a potential impact arm in the bullpen – almost like a bonus one, because we’re not COUNTING on him to contribute, but his upside is right up there with any late-inning lefty the Cubs otherwise could’ve found. Even in a mixed year, he still had a sub-3 ERA over 59.2 innings at Iowa, with a 57.0%(!) groundball rate, and a 29.8% strikeout rate. Hoby Milner and Caleb Thielbar are the default assumption lefties in the bullpen to open the season, but the Cubs will assuredly need someone like Little or Riley Martin (or maybe even Jordan Wicks) to contribute as another lefty throughout the year. Steele wants to make sure folks know:

I swear I’m not 5’5 150 lbs. Luke is literally just that big

    — Justin Steele (@J_Steele21) January 13, 2026 But seriously. Justin Steele is a plenty big dude. But Luke Little is a monster. And speaking of relievers getting to work in Arizona, on whom we aren’t counting for impact, but who have obvious late-inning potential:

    — Rich Biesterfeld (@biest22) January 13, 2026 Imagine a world where 2024 Porter Hodge shows up in 2026, and you aren’t even expecting it. Massive impact in a strong bullpen group. This is something we’ll be discussing in more detail come Spring Training, especially since it can change on a dime with a couple injuries, but teeing it up:

Depending on pitching staff health, the Cubs will be exploring using a six man rotation this season.Past injuries to Imanaga,Steele and a veteran mix of Boyd and Taillon makes this a logical approach.Rea and Assad are excellent swing men.7 bullpen guys is a challenge.

    — Bruce Levine (@MLBBruceLevine) January 13, 2026 We talked a lot about atypical starter usage last year, including the possibility of a true six-man rotation for stretches throughout the year. The Cubs ultimately did not go that route, instead very rarely incorporating openers and spot starts. The reality is that the schedule, pitcher routines, and injury issues all conspire to make a true, regular, consistent six-man rotation a very difficult thing to pull off, and that’s to say nothing of the tiny bullpen it leaves. I tend to think being a little more aggressive with openers and spot starts is the way to go when you have SO MUCH starting depth that (1) optionable to the minors, and (2) capable of pitching in relief. You spread the pitches and innings around, you keep guys fresh and healthy, you optimize match-ups, you reduce the number of times hitters are seeing a specific pitcher, and you put your staff in the best possible position to have some real bullets left by the time late-September and October roll around. A very fun list:

    — Sarah Langs (@slangsonsports.bsky.social) 2026-01-13T20:33:22.514Z Basically, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Nico Hoerner are exactly as good as Bobby Witt Jr. In all seriousness, Witt is one of the best players in baseball, and his power numbers might be about to spike even further:

    — Kansas City Royals (@Royals) January 13, 2026 If you missed it, the Cubs added some outfield depth by claiming former Dodgers outfielder Justin Dean off of waivers. The Nationals are officially joining MLB’s broadcasting arm:

    — Chelsea Janes (@chelsea_janes) January 14, 2026 If the full slate of former Bally/Diamond/FanDuel teams, who’ve lost their deals for 2026, also join up with MLB, then the league will control local broadcast rights for 16 teams. If you’re checking the math, that’s more than half of the league, which seems like a pretty meaningful number ahead of the CBA negotiations, where Rob Manfred himself has said getting a national, blackout-free broadcasting/streaming plan in place is a priority. The Dodgers are so stacked it is stupid and annoying and stupid:

    — FanGraphs Baseball (@fangraphs.com) 2026-01-14T14:01:52.661Z Man, 84 appearances in a single season. MORE than half of the games. Absolutely bonkers: Bobby Howry. The guy made 236 appearances from 2006-08 for the Cubs. Nearly 80 games per year for three straight years. Just an unthinkable workload. Chicago officially has a professional softball team. Rio Foster was a passenger in a drunk driving accident in September. To this day he can't walk, eat on his own, or hold a normal conversation. The Angels have not committed to keeping Rio insured. His family needs the coverage, and lots of help.Read: t.co/U4WywlZad5 pic.twitter.com/YYIwWwnuAd
