Syrian army designates “closed military zones” east of Aleppo

The Syrian army’s Operations Directorate said it has designated closed military zones in the eastern Aleppo countryside after monitoring troop buildups affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in coordination with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and remnants of the former regime.

According to a statement carried by Syrian state TV al-Ikhbariya on Tuesday, January 13, the areas had been used as launch points for Iranian-made suicide drones that targeted the city of Aleppo in recent weeks, This prompted the army to impose a military closure effective immediately.

The Operations Directorate said the decision covers the city of Deir Hafer (eastern Aleppo countryside), the Babiri Qawas area, and the city of Maskanah (eastern Aleppo countryside).

The directorate urged civilians to stay away from military deployment sites in these areas, stressing that the army will take all necessary measures to prevent their use in any attacks that threaten the security of the city and its residents.

Al-Ikhbariya quoted a military source as saying that Syrian army forces shelled SDF positions around Deir Hafer with artillery fire in response to drone attacks that had targeted the vicinity of the village of Hamima.

For its part, the SDF said that what it described as “Damascus government factions” shelled the town of Deir Hafer with artillery, without reporting casualties.

    Direct threat zone

A military source told Enab Baladi that the Deir Hafer area is witnessing a state of ongoing military alert and preparations, amid information indicating it has been used as a launch point for suicide drones that targeted Aleppo in recent weeks.

The source, who requested anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media, said military preparations in Deir Hafer are continuous. He added that the area is now being treated as a direct threat point, which explains the heightened military readiness.

He added that areas seized by the SDF following the fall of the former regime, which had previously been under its control, will ultimately revert to state authority.

SDF forces had taken control of parts of Deir Hafer after the fall of the former regime on December 8, 2024.

Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib said the city has overcome most of its ordeal and that security has been fully restored.

However, he stressed that suffering has not yet ended for residents of other parts of Aleppo governorate and Syria in general.

In a post on his official accounts, al-Gharib said some areas east of the city, marked in red by the army’s Operations Directorate, are witnessing continued troop buildups by the SDF in coordination with the PKK and remnants of the former regime. He said these areas have turned into launch points for drones and attacks that threaten civilian security.

Accordingly, he announced these areas as “closed military zones” effective immediately, calling on civilians to stay away and comply with instructions from the competent authorities to protect their lives and ensure the safety of the city.

Al-Gharib confirmed that the Syrian army will take all necessary measures to prevent the use of these areas for any operations that threaten Aleppo and its residents, stressing that adherence to official instructions is essential to safeguarding lives and public security.

    Bridges targeted

Syrian state TV al-Ikhbariya reported on Tuesday that the SDF blew up the bridge of the village of Umm Tina in the vicinity of Deir Hafer in the eastern Aleppo countryside. The bridge separates areas controlled by the SDF from those under Syrian government control.

Later, the channel quoted a military source as saying that the Syrian army thwarted an attempt by SDF elements to rig and blow up the bridge connecting the villages of Rasm al-Imam and Rasm al-Kurum near Deir Hafer in eastern Aleppo.

Previously, Tel Maaz Bridge north of Deir Hafer and Ibrahim al-Khalil Bridge to the south were also bombed in the eastern Aleppo countryside.

New Syrian army reinforcements arrived on Monday, January 12, at deployment points in Deir Hafer and Maskanah, amid rising military tensions in the area.

Al-Ikhbariya quoted a military source as saying the reinforcements came after the SDF brought in fighter groups from the PKK and remnants of the former regime to the same axis.

At the same time, military correspondents affiliated with the Ministry of Defense published video footage showing Syrian army troop buildups and military convoys heading toward the eastern Aleppo countryside.

In contrast, Enab Baladi observed the SDF bringing convoys of civilians to the area, saying they were expressing solidarity with fighters who withdrew from the last SDF-held positions in the city of Aleppo. The outlet also documented the arrival of military vehicles and new fighters to areas adjacent to the contact lines, stretching from Deir Ezzor through Raqqa and up to the Aleppo countryside.

These developments come amid rapid military movements in areas east of Aleppo in recent days.
