Martin's fifth album, and his first English-speaking release, Ricky Martin, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. Previously, Martin was a member of the wildly popular Latin teen band, Menudo.
The LP spawned the hits "Livin' La Vida Loca" (No. 1), "She's All I Ever Had" (No. 2), and "Shake Your Bon-Bon" (No. 22). Martin would go on to have another Top 20 Billboard hit, "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely," a duet with Christina Aguilera, in 2001. Martin continued to have success on the Billboard Latin Music charts and was honored by MTV as a Latin Music Icon in 2025.
With his Grammy performance, Martin ushered in a new era of Latin artists poised to dominate the charts. Performers such as Shakira, Marc Anthony, and Enrique Iglesias became pop mainstays with their Latin-influenced music, according to the Grammy website.
